Jacob Brown ALLEN (often found in documents as Jacob B. Allen) was born in 1837 in Athens County, Ohio. His parents came to Ohio from Morris County, New Jersey, where both families were influential. Jacob moved with his father and stepmother and their children to Davis County, Iowa when Jacob was small, and there they established themselves in the community of Floris. It is there that the parents and several family members are buried.

Jacob married Christiann Miller DAVIS of Davis County in 1856; their first child was born a year later in Denver. They are found farming in Arapahoe County in the 1870 Census, and in 1881 he homesteaded land in Colorado at Niwot, taking along his family. The ALLEN family established a dairy cattle operation that was to last for over half a century. Jacob served 122 days in the 3rd Colorado Cavalry regiment, from 01 Sept 1864 to 31 Dec 1864. According to researcher Jack R. Box, the 3rd Colorado Cavalry regiment was a 100-day enlistment called by Territorial Governor John Evans as a regiment of Indian fighters. This service made Jacob a Civil War veteran, eligible as a pensioner. Both Jacob and Christiann, as well as a granddaughter, Louise, and Jacob's sister Louise Allen WOODCOCK HOLDER, are buried in the cemetery at Niwot. Another of his sisters, Sarah, is buried in Sunshine Cemetery west of Boulder.

Jacob's son Jacob Max ( "Max" ) ALLEN carried on the Niwot farming operation for many years, adding more land. ( The other sons, although older than Max, eventually left the state: James to California, Calvin to Idaho. Jacob married Hattie Louise AUGUST in 1904. He and Hattie are buried in Boulder at Green Mountain Cemetery.
